kity and colby: if you haven't heard about them
yet, the monthly denver guerrilla parties are the
bees knees. to get in on the action, check out
www.queerbar.com. at last month's party,
we caught up with billy trix, mastermind
extraordinaire, and discussed these legendary
soirees.
how did you hear about the san francisco
guerrilla bar?
the original organizer of the denver guerrilla
queer bar lived and worked in san francisco for
several months last year. it was all the rage out
there; everyone knows about guerrilla queer bar.
it's now in 15 cities around the world including
heidelberg, germany. we thought what a great idea
to bring to denver.
what is the goal you have in mind when
planning these events: fun? fabulousity? political
activism?
first and foremost...fun! fun! fun! our goal is to
round up the most exciting, adventurous, and
friendly people in denver and give them an excuse
to have a really fun night! we're always looking
to find a new place that we have never explored
and check it out with a few hundred fun people.
guerrilla queer bar is not a protest (like act up
or queer nation), it's a celebration or our
increasing freedom to be ourselves, wherever we
decide to go.
on your website you mention that you are
making no money at these events...how on earth do
you pull it off and why do you do it?
we have a great group of people involved in the
organizing who have put in long hours to bring
denver's guerrilla bar to life. after our initial
campaigns to get the word out, the fantastic
parties and word of mouth have kept the list
growing. new people sign up every single day.
we've gained 1,300 members in just three short
months...almost as many as there are on billy's
trick list! the best part of the whole
experience has been the strong new friendships
that have formed. we have met some of the most
fantastic people at the parties. and as a group,
the organizers have become really close friends.
we love everything about it ... the friends, the
fun and hearing about people's experiences at the
parties!
what's the best thing that has happened so
far?
there have been so many funny and crazy
things. "the birth" has to be one of the
funniest things that has happened so far. in the
middle of the patio at blue 67, our white trash
themed-party, a man dressed in drag and a lime
green muumuu gave birth to two lovely children she
quickly named "blue 68" and "blue
69." as the crowd screamed and cheered, and
the woman kicked and squirmed from the
contractions and yanked two dolls out from under
her dress. one of the grape juice soaked dolls
lost it's head during the procedure which caused
the crowd to yell even louder. at our last
party, the denver cycle sluts lead by nuclia waste
graced us with their fabulously glittery selves at
the funky buddah! the bar roared as they walked in
and that was just the beginning. we quite enjoyed
the ultra popular community icons joining us at
the party. we love them because just like billy
trix, they are all about having fun!
what kind of reaction do the guerrillas get
from the bar owners and staff?
they love us! the staff seems to have just
as much fun as we do and make lots of money in the
process. sometimes they aren't sure what's hitting
them when we first arrive, but they have always
come around. both the paramount and the funky
buddha made announcements thanking us for coming.
what advice would you give to someone
attending a guerrilla party for the first time?
come ready to have a great time. people tell
us that guerrilla queer bar is a great place to
meet people. when you throw a bunch of boys and
girls into a wild or unusual situation -- like
taking over a straight bar -- it seems to take
their attention off of their nervousness about
talking to new people. it's like we are all in
this together. everyone seems to focus on all the
fun and craziness around them instead of being
shy. and one last piece of advice. don't
forget to show up on time, not drag queen time as
our parties are sometimes mobile. we try to stay
at the first place for at least an hour, but after
that we might be gone.
what kind of things might we be seeing in
the future from guerrilla, that you can tease us
with now?
billy keeps his hit list well guarded. just
like an aspiring porn star, there's no limit to
what billy might do. however, we can tell you the
crystal ball predicts bar crawls, breeder dance
club invasions, brunches and road trips to the
burbs. the san francisco group even rented out an
adult porn theatre and threw a party. with the
group that shows up to the denver guerrilla
parties, we can promise you lots of wild crazy
fun. as always, ideas and suggestions are
encouraged and welcome. drop us an email at

oh, guerrilla
hello friends, are you bored, tired, listless? do you poop out at gay
parties? the answer to your malaise just might be contained in a big,
hairy spoonful of guerrilla queer bar, the mobile party happening, that is
sweeping the country and has quickly carved out a niche here in denver
amongst the more adventurous glbt types. basically, guerrilla queer bar is all about uprooting gays and lesbians
from their native environments (read: gay bars) and transplanting them into
clubs and venues that are generally considered queer-challenged. but don't
get them wrong, guerrilla queer bar isn't trying to take business away from
our beloved gay nightspots rather, they're just trying to help us broaden
our horizons. as an anonymous source from the shadowy and mysterious gqb
says, "we're not competing with the gay bars. we try to do our thing
relatively early in the evening, as a fun warm-up before people head out to
wherever." guerrilla queer bar takes place about once a month at new and different
destinations. check out their web site at www.queerbar.com and join
the mailing list to find out more. |
